Use Shake to create composited image sequences using combinations of live footage and computer-generated elements. Tracking, live action background with moving object and computer generated foreground element matching that movement.
Here are the source materials for the tracking shot.
This was a very complicated shot. I filmed it using a drumstick marked with black tape in the hope that I would be able to match move the stick with two points and make it drive my lightsaber motion.
When I finally got the footage into Shake however, tracking was not an option. The video was too grainy and the stick was too small. I ended up having to manually match move using one point every frame.
After that, I built a lightsaber in maya and animated it to rotate as it does in the video, but it does not move directionally, just rotates.
Next I pulled the lightsaber in to shake and did an overnode with the matchmove to see how well the saber followed my hand.
It was not perfect, so I added a pan and animated it to adjust the lightsaber as neccessary to more closely follow my hand.
Then I had to create a rotoshape that masked out the section of the lightsaber that was above my hand so it looked like i was holding it instead of it being attached to the outsdie of my hand.
That was also a frame by frame manual process.
